Unpacking archives with double clicking on Windows

Posted on

Something that bothered me for a long time on Windows was the default action of 7-Zip to open the file manager when double clicking on a archive.

In 99.999% of the case I use a archive I want to unpack it into a new folder in the same folder I am in. So by opening the manager by default I have to either right click on the file and look for the right option to extract it in a new folder or find the right action in the file manager.

I looked up some solutions up online and exported the needed registry keys so you can just import the to make .7z, .rar and .zip files unpack on double click.

Download .zip File with registry keys.

Download the file above and unpack the .zip file for the last time by using either right click or by the file manager.

Then double click on the .reg file to execute it, accept the warning and you should be done.

Let me know if you have any problems or questions. I tested this on my Windows 10 machine without any problems.
